Old Suttonian Thomas Brunt (2016 H) was recently featured on BBC Breakfast as part of a piece highlighting the role of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in supplying mail to the Orkney Islands. Tom has been working for a year in a start-up aeronautical company called Windracers Ltd, which aims to develop and bring to market UAVs for non-military purposes such as delivering goods and humanitarian aid to remote areas.
He has worked as part of a team developing the plane, which was featured on the BBC report detailing how the plane has been used by Royal Mail to deliver post to remote islands. As part of the trials, Tom was involved in setting up various test flights in Sussex, Cornwall and out to the Isles of Scilly and has had a key role in landing the plane during these trials.
After leaving SVS in 2016, Tom completed his MEng in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Southampton, graduating in July 2020. During the course of his Masters, Tom completed two engineering projects on the development of aspects of UAV technology, which set him up perfectly for his role with Windracers.
