Welcome to the OS Golf Group

Introduction

This group provides information on the Old Suttonian Golf team, which competes each year in the Grafton Morrish competition against other alumni associations. The group also includes details about the regular School and SVS Foundation Golf competitions held annually, as well as news of the School's own Golf team.

The Grafton Morrish

The Grafton Morrish is the annual Golf competition organised and managed by the Public Schools Old Boys Golf Association. The competition started in 1964 and was founded by Old Suttonians Peter Grafton (1933 M, Governor 1971-1996) and Peter Morrish (1943 W, Governor 1976-1991).

Teams of six, three pairs per school, are required to get through stroke-play qualifying days at various venues around the country in May each year (with the exception of the previous year's winners who receive an automatic bye). From that qualifying competition, the country's best 48 schools progress to compete in match play finals held in late September or early October (depending on Norfolk tides) at Hunstanton Golf Club and Royal West Norfolk Golf Club.

For the OS, the qualification round takes place at Knole Park Golf Course in Sevenoaks, against 15 to 20 other schools from the South-East. The requirement to go through the qualification round ensures that the 48 teams remaining in the competition for the finals have already gone through a thorough test of their golfing capabilities. As a result of this, and the fact that many more schools can produce six good golfers than ten (as is required for The Halford Hewitt), the general standard of golf in the Grafton Morrish finals is extremely high; indeed many schools field teams containing international class players and have a handicap total of little more than zero.

For any lover of the Golf, the trip to Norfolk for the finals is highly recommended, and we would encourage as many of you as possible to be there to support the OS team. For more information about the Graton Morrish, please refer to the Grafton Morrish website.
