We were sad to hear the news of Roger Bettle's (1959 F) sudden death on 4th January 2025, at the age of 81. Roger was born in 1943, younger son of Lawrence and Jessie Bettle and brother to Gerald. He was educated first at Shernolds School, Maidstone and then at Sutton Valence School as a day pupil in Founder's.
Having left School, Roger joined the family business which had butchers shops in Holland Road and Upper Stone Street. Apparently, one of his early duties was to make deliveries to customers on a purpose-built bicycle, with a tray over the front wheel. He kept the bicycle until fairly recently.
Roger was a member of the Maidstone Club for many years and served as secretary for some of that time. He was also a member of The East India Club, St James's Square. Additionally, he was Churchwarden at St Nicholas Church Linton for over 20 years and contributed a great deal of his time to the running of the Church.
Roger was a great character who maintained his links with the School throughout his life. He would often visit the School for a chat and a catch up and was a regular guest at Speech Day and the annual Carol Services. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
