Last Saturday, we were delighted to welcome the family of Ian Kay (1941 M) to the School for a special memorial ceremony in Ian's memory. After his passing this summer, we have long intended to provide some form of a memorial on the School site for Ian and it was decided that this would take the form of a new tree, which had been pre-planted on the south side of Prefects' Lawn. Ian's family members were joined for the planting ceremony by 20 Old Suttonians who all knew Ian from his time at the School, or the significant amount of time he spent on the Old Suttonians' Association Committee. It was a pleasure to be able to host the event and welcome guests onto site to recognise a true stalwart of the OS community. Ian will be truly missed and we hope the tree, in its prominent position in the centre of the School, provides a lasting memory to all that he gave to SVS.

The ceremony, led by the School's Chaplain, was attended by the Headmaster and a number of members of the SVS Foundation Council and OS Committee. Although Mr Thomas never had the pleasure of meeting Ian, he spoke of his hope that future generations of Suttonians go on to retain the same pride and affinity to the School that Ian maintained throughout his life. He added that it was entirely right, despite the current circumstances, to take the time to properly recognise Ian's contribution. The event concluded with an outdoor reception on Headmaster's Lawn, at which David Pickard (Staff 1977-2001, 2009-2015), the SVS Foundation Archivist, gave a final toast before guests had a chance to reminisce about their own memories of Ian. All in all, a fitting farewell; we are grateful to all of those who attended.
