After several heavy downpours, the sun finally made an appearance and the SVS Foundation Car Show was underway. We were treated to a magnificent display of around 50 cars of different vintages and styles, spanning over a hundred years of automotive history.
The overall Best in Show was kindly judged by Sir Paul Carter, and he chose Mr Bishop’s Bullnose Cowley “Travellers Van” as the overall winner, presenting Mr Bishop with the John Haynes Trophy. Other winners included a 1991 Mini Cooper (Modern Classic), a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 (Classic) and a 1938 Armstong Siddeley (Pre-War and Vintage). An additional prize should have been created for Mr Stymest, who managed to finally get his Willys Jeep to the show, as it broke down a total of six time between home and the Show!
It was great to see so many Old Suttonians, current and former parents, students and staff, as well as friends from the wider SVS community supporting the event and having a great time. The younger children (and some adults alike) enjoyed playing the traditional fete games, whilst everyone enjoyed listening to one of our current students Josh S (Fifth Form), discussing his rallying career to date in the main marquee. Congratulations on an exceptional presentation Josh.
We were lucky that the weather held long enough for the parade lap to take place around the Cricket Boundary, before play resumed between the Band of Brothers and the School 1st XI team. The Car Show Committee - Robert Sinclair (1967 M), James Slaughter (1992 F) and Charles Tassell (1977 F) organised a great day in conjunction with the School, although none could take credit for the Spitfire fly past which just happened to take place in the afternoon, adding another dimension to proceedings!
